The San Carlos Youth Softball Association (SCYSA) offers recreational and competitive fastpitch softball for girls and young women in San Carlos and surrounding communities. The Board of Directors is responsible for operations of the spring Recreation League and the Force tournament team, and is elected each June to a 13-month term that runs from September 1 through September 30 of the following year. The organization is a volunteer organization run by parents of the athletes, and most work is done by committees led by parent volunteers.
The Board of Directors includes positions such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Summer Coordinator (Force), Player Agent, Head Coach(es), Head Manager, Field Commissioner, and At-large Members. The Board usually meets on the second Tuesday of each month. All parents, coaches, family, friends, and other adults are expected and required to exhibit good sportsmanship and abide by a Code of Conduct at all times.
SCYSA provides field hotlines for weather-related field status updates, and on rainy days natural grass fields are often closed while turf fields are often kept open. The schedule has included tryouts such as 12U tryouts on Sunday, April 26 from 10:00–11:30 am at Flanagan, 10U tryouts on Sunday, April 26 from 12:00–1:30 pm at Flanagan, 8U tryouts on Sunday, April 26 from 2:00–4:00 pm at Flanagan, 14U tryouts on Monday, April 27 from 5:00–6:30 pm at Madsen, and make-up tryouts on Monday, April 27 at 5:00 pm at Flanagan Field. Field hotline hours have included Monday–Friday hours and a separate field status number for Saturday, Sunday, and weekdays after 5 pm.
The organization was founded in the 1970s as part of Bobby Sox softball and took on its current name in 1989 when it joined the American Softball Association (ASA). In 1990, SCYSA held its first summer tournament, and in 2000 it named the tournament in honor of Jan Macpherson. SCYSA has earned recognition such as a 14U team placing 2nd in the Gold Division at a Bownet Qualifier.
SCYSA’s community involvement includes the President serving as the principal liaison between SCYSA and the San Carlos School Board, Tierra Linda School, San Carlos Park & Recreation Department, the San Carlos Athletic Sites Advisory Council (ASAC), the San Carlos City Council, Peninsula ASA, Peninsula ASA 14’s League, the Peninsula Officials Association, and other organizations as needed. SCYSA offers scholarships each year to one or more alumnae of the league who are graduating high school and continuing their education. The organization relies on volunteers for board roles, game-day help, and behind-the-scenes roles, and has sponsors including Steel Magnolia Salon, GDA Commercial, San Carlos Orthodontics, Martha Morley Direct Mortgage Funding, Legarza Sports, Jacklyn Kurth Orthodontics, From the Heart Home Care, and Tavarez Orthodontics.
