Climate Kids is a series of community-based collaborative projects where participants take part in science activities, storytelling, art, hands-on science activities, and field trips. Climate Kids Traveling Trunks include hands-on science, art, and storytelling activities that use real data on regional climate impacts and a Tribal Perspectives module. Climate Kids Connects is an online education portal with educational lessons, resources, and activities about important climate topics.
Since its founding by the Climate Science Alliance in 2015, Climate Kids has created more than 30 Traveling Trunks to build climate education capacity and has trained hundreds of educators on climate messaging. Since 2015, Climate Kids has reached over 250,000 youth across five countries. Climate Kids projects bring together local artists, scientists, educators, and storytellers, and partners include the San Diego Natural History Museum, Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, Pala Environmental Department, Manzanita Environmental and Natural Resources Department, Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Pala Band of Mission Indians, Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians, and Solana Beach Eco Rotary Club. Climate Kids Traveling Trunks are education kits with NGSS-aligned curricula for grades K–12 and are available for all educators, both formal and informal, to check out. Each student is recognized with a Certificate of Excellence to signify their new role as an environmental steward. One Climate Kids community educator said, “Thank you so much for providing the tools to articulate climate science in a way which people can understand and relate.”
