Since 1988, the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation has helped to protect and steward Mission Trails, and the City of San Diego has benefited from this partnership for more than 30 years. The Foundation’s mission includes offering a range of free educational programs that serve the community, from toddlers to adult learners, and these programs provide equal access to outdoor education and foster a sense of place and environmental stewardship. The leadership team includes Executive Director Jennifer Morrissey, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of San Diego Andy Field, Communications and Events Coordinator Taylor Crowley, Operations Manager Janet Gavaldon, Education and Outreach Coordinator Jonathan Serna, Educators Adamari Martinez, Heidi Bates, Robin Kendall, and Kimmi Perkins, as well as Ranger Monica Demetry and Ranger Steven Blankenship.
Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation has been selected as a 2025 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Christopher Ward (District 78) and is one of more than 100 nonprofits across California that have been named a 2025 Nonprofit of the Year. The Foundation receives funding through contributions from individual donors, grants, and other sources, including the Visitor Center Gift Shop, and community members are encouraged to make a tax-deductible donation to support the Foundation’s work. Testimonials note that Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation exemplifies what can be accomplished when community and government work together, highlight that the park is one of the largest urban parks in the country and is growing thanks to funding from the San Diego River Conservancy, and state that the City’s partnership with the Foundation has led to investment in the park, including the construction of the Visitor and Interpretive Center and ongoing stewardship so the park can be enjoyed by future generations.
