About
Mission Trails Educational Programs and Camps includes activities such as the 33rd annual Mission Trails Photo Contest, Free Trail Guide-Led Nature Walks, Mission Trails Summer Camp, the Eco Ambassador Program, a Summer Program for High School Students, Wingin’ It Walks, and Ranger-Led and Foundation-Led School Field Trips. The programs include free educational offerings that serve participants from toddlers to adult learners and focus on outdoor education through these specific activities.
The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation has provided stewardship of Mission Trails for more than 30 years and has helped to protect and steward the park since 1988. In addition to conservation and habitat restoration efforts, the Foundation offers a range of free educational programs that provide equal access to outdoor education and foster a sense of place and environmental stewardship. The Foundation’s leadership team includes Executive Director Jennifer Morrissey, Communications and Events Coordinator Taylor Crowley, Operations Manager Janet Gavaldon, Education and Outreach Coordinator Jonathan Serna, Educators Adamari Martinez, Heidi Bates, Robin Kendall, and Kimmi Perkins, Ranger Monica Demetry for the Trail Guide Program and special walk requests, and Ranger Steven Blankenship for ranger-led school field trips. The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation was chosen as a 2025 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Christopher Ward (District 78) and is one of more than 100 nonprofits across California named a 2025 Nonprofit of the Year. Assemblymember Ward, Executive Director Jennifer Morrissey, and City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department Director Andy Field have publicly recognized the Foundation’s role in protecting access to natural spaces, stewarding one of the largest urban parks in the country, and supporting investment in the park, including the construction of the Visitor and Interpretive Center. The Foundation was honored at a luncheon in Sacramento on May 21 by state senators and assembly members for outstanding contributions to its community, and it receives funding from individual donors, grants, and other sources, including the Visitor Center Gift Shop.
