The LEAGUE of Amazing Programmers states that its mission is to prepare young people for science and technology careers of the 21st century through a multi-level program of weekly classes from beginner to industry certification, real coding education, professional mentorship, and project-based learning. The organization offers a multi-level curriculum that takes students from beginner to professional programmers, and all curriculum is openly available at curriculum.jointheleague.org. The program includes an advanced apprenticeship program where students work on substantial research projects and open-source contributions, and it works closely with students to gain professional certification as Java programmers and secure job opportunities at top companies. The LEAGUE offers in-person or online classes, including after-school coding programs at partner schools where classes are held directly at the child’s school.
The LEAGUE runs free and low-cost classes all over San Diego County and offers free Tech Club workshops, scholarship opportunities, and outreach initiatives through partnerships with schools, libraries, and community centers. Its community programs are described as removing financial and geographic barriers to computer science education and include partnerships and collaborations with schools to give students deeper experiences. The LEAGUE’s partnership with High Tech High includes annual Ender Session projects that bring real-world software engineering experience to High Tech High students, and its partnership with Geeks Academy and El Garage Hub brings coding education to Tijuana through collaborative workshops and classes. The organization notes that it has earned community recognition and the trust of families, partners, and philanthropic leaders across San Diego.
Student testimonials describe individual experiences with the program. One student, Stephanie, states that The LEAGUE of Amazing Programmers built her confidence to become an engineer and that an internship through the program changed her perspective on engineering. Another student, Lucas, states that the program helped him develop software and problem-solving skills that he used to lead an award-winning robotics team in the San Diego region. A third student, R. Ramirez, states that joining in 7th grade as an activity chosen by a parent later became a favorite activity and developed into a career choice.
