Villa Musica was founded as a non-profit corporation in November 2005 and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Villa Musica has over 30 highly qualified teaching artists on faculty at its main campus, all with degrees in music and many with Masters’ or Doctorates in their specialization. Its mission statement is that Villa Musica makes music accessible through education, performance, and community engagement.
In the fall of 2019, Villa Musica restructured group class levels for guitar and violin so that students stay in each level until they have met the skill criteria for moving to the next level, with movement between levels decided in conference with parents and based on successful execution of required skills. Younger students may remain longer in the “Dolce” level, while older students may progress to “Brilliante” within a year, and the “Brilliante” level serves as a continuing education option for children who are not ready for private lessons or ensembles and who have met the “Dolce” and “Scherzo” skills requirements. Teaching Artists provide a curriculum and skills list at the beginning of each 10-week session.
Villa Musica’s Community Access initiative offers music education and music making across San Diego County, including programming at SDUSD schools, satellite site libraries, and ENCORE! programs for seniors. Villa Musica describes itself with the hashtag #YourHomeForMusic, and states a goal of creating a focal point for community music education in San Diego and a vision of providing a space for people to explore music in their lives across all facets of the artistic experience, from inspiration to mastery and from listening to performing.
