Since 1984, Larkin Street Youth Services has helped over 80,000 young people in San Francisco build brighter futures. Its mission is to create a continuum of services that inspires youth to move beyond the street, nurturing potential, promoting dignity, and supporting bold steps by all. The organization offers a range of services that includes housing, employment, education, and wellness, with housing paired with wraparound support in education, employment, and wellness. Outreach and drop-in centers in the Tenderloin and Haight neighborhoods include an Engagement Center that offers a safe space to spend the day with meals, showers, sleeping pods, and computers, along with services such as food, showers, laundry, and a place to connect. Health and wellness services include medical care, mental health services, and harm reduction support, and housing options range from emergency shelter to transitional and long-term housing. Larkin Street is the largest nonprofit provider in San Francisco for young people experiencing homelessness and is supported by private donors, foundations, corporations, and government funding. It is part of a national movement to end youth homelessness through policy partnerships, uses data to refine programs and share insights across the field, and centers youth voices, especially BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth, to guide services and set priorities. By partnering with schools, community organizations, and families, Larkin Street identifies at-risk youth and provides guidance to reduce housing instability. One alumnus shared, “Larkin Street gave me permission to pursue any and everything I see myself becoming. I now realize I can be whoever I want to be.”
