Star Dance Studio was established in 1950, when founder Ruth Jevarian opened the studio. She retired in 1974 and turned the studio over to her daughter, Micky Powell, who is the current school director and has managed the studio for more than 40 years. For more than 75 years, Star Dance Studio has brought dance to thousands of children and adults. The studio is dedicated to the memory of founder Ruth Jevarian.

The leadership team includes Director Micky Powell and founder Ruth Jevarian, and the business operates as Star Dance Studio LLC. Tami graduated from the San Francisco School of the Arts, holds a B.A. in Theater Arts & Dance, and specializes in ballet, contemporary, jazz, musical theater, and hip-hop. Monique is a certified member teacher of Dance Masters of America. Clare graduated from San Diego State University with a minor in dance and is a member of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. Sophia has a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

In earlier years, students from the studio performed around the city at special events, hospitals, and senior centers. Star Dance Studio is a registered servicemark. The studio’s mission statement from Director Micky Powell is: “Our dancers learn the joy of movement, teamwork, achievement and discipline in a supportive, loving environment.”

Parent and student comments about Star Dance Studio include: “Star Dance is AMAZING! I graduated from here in 2015, after 14 or so years of dancing! I am so happy with the dancer I've become, and we truly are one big family” (Jillian W., student). One parent describes it as “a warm, welcoming, neighborhood dance school” (Lisa G., parent). Another parent notes that a long-time student “has learned so much … the grace of dance, discipline, responsibility, and I know this sounds corny, but sisterhood” (Pat D., parent). A former student shares, “I spent 16 years there, and every time I went to class, I was welcomed with open arms and love” (Lauren A., student). Another student says, “I am grateful for my love of dance – first cultivated by my experience at Star Dance (1990s). It has brought such joy to my life – yes, I'm still dancing!” (Whitney G., student, 2024).
