About

theCoderSchool After-School Coding Programs include 3D modeling using Blender, Python coding, Scratch game design, game design, and digital design using cutting edge tools. Students can take an Art Class Series in 3D Modeling, Code Class Series in Python, and Code Class Series in Scratch Game Design, as well as coding camps. The program also offers a Digital Arts Studio described as a new program for budding artists and creatives to focus on digital design using cutting edge tools, where no coding is needed.

• Ages: 8–13 years old
• Schedule: Each Art Class Series: 3D Modeling, Code Class Series: Python, and Code Class Series: Scratch Game Design runs for 12 weekly sessions from 3/8–5/31, with no classes on 4/5.
• Price: Art Class Series: 3D Modeling is $399 for 12 weekly sessions; Code Class Series: Python is $399 for 12 weekly sessions; Code Class Series: Scratch Game Design is $399 for 12 weekly sessions.

The Art Class Series: 3D Modeling uses Blender, a 3D computer graphics software toolset, and focuses on learning the foundations of 3D graphics. This series is recommended for ages 10–13 and runs as 3D Modeling 1 on Tuesdays at 3:30pm and 3D Modeling 2 on Tuesdays at 5:30pm. The Digital Arts Studio is described as a new program for the next generation of budding artists and creatives to focus on digital design using cutting edge tools.

The Code Class Series: Python uses a Python platform to explore fundamental concepts and develop problem solving and logical thinking skills. This series is recommended for ages 10–13 and runs from 3/8–5/31 (no classes 4/5) with Python 1 on Sundays at 11:00am and Wednesdays at 5:30pm, Python 2 on Thursdays at 4:30pm, and Python 3 on Fridays at 4:30pm. The Code Class Series: Scratch Game Design uses MIT’s Scratch platform with drag and drop blocks and includes creating games using Scratch. This series is recommended for ages 8–10 and runs from 3/8–5/31 (no classes 4/5) with Scratch Game Design 1 on Sundays at 12:00pm, Wednesdays at 4:30pm, Thursdays at 5:30pm, and Fridays at 5:30pm, and Scratch Game Design 2 on Sundays at 10:00am.

The game design class engages problem solving skills and teaches computer science fundamentals like loops, conditionals, and variables, and math concepts including coordinate geometry, negative numbers, angles, and boolean logic. The flagship after-school program, called Code Coaching, uses a super-small 2:1 teaching ratio and an individualized curriculum, while entry-level classes are offered in a larger ratio. Camps are described as having a low ratio of around 6:1 and are taught by expert Code Coaches.

theCoderSchool After-School Coding Programs are part of a nationwide system of over 70 locations around the country, teaching over 7,000 students every week with the brainpower of 1000+ expert Code Coaches. Classes and camps are taught by expert Code Coaches, and the core program uses a super-small student to teacher ratio (typically 2:1) to tailor lessons to each child’s pace, interests, and goals. The system is headquartered and founded in Silicon Valley and was founded in 2013 as an after-school drop-off (and virtual) program for kids learning to code, with a stated mission that every kid is different, so they are taught with custom projects built to suit each student.

The mission statement says the program focuses on creativity, problem solving, and confidence, and on understanding technology fundamentals from how the internet works to what makes up Artificial Intelligence. It states that students build strong programming foundations while learning how AI works, how to use it responsibly, and how to think critically about technology. The program’s slogans are “Learn to code. Change the world®.” and “Learn to Code, Change the World®.”

TheCoderSchool is described as a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge (CAC) and collaborates with CAC to run a national recognition program to identify top applications from CAC submissions. Nancy Pelosi named one of their students, Shreya Aghi, winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 11th District for the app “Teen Tobacco Termination,” created while working with Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) focusing on tobacco cessation among teenagers. TheCoderSchool also runs a “National Top App of the Month” program selecting the best app out of hundreds submitted nationwide by students.

Parent testimonials describe customized curriculum and online learning experiences. One parent from New Jersey wrote, “If you want your child to learn STEM concepts via coding, send them here. I’ve been in IT for 23 years and I have not seen anything close to the customized curriculum they created. Hands down, this is the place you want your kids to be.” Another parent from California wrote that her son is having a wonderful experience, that the instructors are exceptional, and that online classes have been engaging and “a quarantine lifesaver.” A parent from Georgia noted that her son is loving his online coding lessons and online spring break camp and that he has fun creating games and then working on them until his next session. A parent from Connecticut wrote that the kids really loved the Scratch camp and that they had not seen them this excited about learning something new in a long time.
