The program’s flagship after-school program, Code Coaching, uses a 2:1 teaching ratio with individualized curriculum. Camps use a low ratio of around 6:1 and are taught by Code Coaches described as expert. TheCoderSchool is part of a nationwide system of over 70 locations teaching over 7,000 students every week with the support of more than 1,000 Code Coaches. The organization describes itself as an after-school drop-off and virtual coding school for kids, with entry-level classes, @school classes, coding camps, and a Digital Arts Studio that focuses on digital design using cutting edge tools without requiring coding. The Digital Arts Studio includes a small-group class using Blender to teach foundations of 3D graphics, and the AppStream product offers an online weekly video format for new coders taught by Code Coaches.
TheCoderSchool states that it focuses on teaching kids to think logically, explain their ideas, and problem-solve creatively rather than just rely on AI. Its mission statement says it believes every child is unique and that it mentors them with custom projects, with an emphasis on consistent problem solving, understanding technology fundamentals such as how the internet works and what makes up artificial intelligence, and learning how AI works and how to use it responsibly. The organization was founded in 2013 and 2014 statements describe it as founded and headquartered in Silicon Valley and as the first and largest kids coding school in Silicon Valley with more locations on the way.
TheCoderSchool is a longtime partner of the Congressional App Challenge (CAC) and beginning in 2025–2026 is set to collaborate with CAC to run a national recognition program to identify a handful of top applications from thousands of CAC submissions. Nancy Pelosi named one of its students, Shreya Aghi, winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 11th District. The program also runs an internal National Top App of the Month vote, and in May 2026 the winner was Leo, age 9, from West County, MO, for a Scratch app called “Math Quiz.”
Parent testimonials describe customized curriculum, engaging online classes, helpful coaches and staff, and kids enjoying creating games and Scratch camps, including comments from parents in New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Connecticut.
