About

4Leaders Martial Arts offers training in martial arts with a focus on traditional Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The school teaches these disciplines in a modern, student-centered environment that supports kids, teens, and adults at every level. Every martial arts class begins and ends with a bow, and respect is woven into everything students do.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

Since opening his first martial arts studio in San Juan Capistrano in 2003, Founder and Head Master Instructor Sergio Cardenas has dedicated his life to teaching. He is a 6th-degree black belt in Taekwondo and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with more than 40 years of martial arts experience, and he is a former international competitor who earned a bronze medal at the World Championships and multiple medals at the Pan American Games. Lead Master Instructor Jennifer Buckman is a 4th-degree black belt in Taekwondo, has trained since 2012, has been a teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing since 1999 (with the Capistrano Unified School District since 2010), is fluent in American Sign Language, and holds certifications to teach all age groups from birth through college. The program uses a values-based belt progression system where each belt is tied to a specific character trait, and each rank is connected to a core value such as focus, perseverance, accountability, or leadership that students are expected to understand and apply in real life, with advancement earned not just by physical skill but also by showing maturity, effort, and mindset. At 4Leaders Martial Arts, the stated mission is to help students become strong, confident leaders through disciplined training and core values like respect, focus, and integrity. Sergio Cardenas is also the author of Leader Parents and works with families to develop strong, value-driven homes.
