Director Katie Kerwin-Gielniak holds a B.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts CAP21 Conservatory and is a Bay Area native and alum of the Westlake School for the Performing Arts and Schumacher School of Dance. Her career spans more than 30 years of performing professionally and teaching acting, voice, and dance, including over 14 years leading the Musical Theatre Program at the Westlake School for the Performing Arts and Schumacher School of Dance, and she has experience in early childhood development. Katie has developed mastery in classical vocal training, musical theatre/pop vocal performance, Theatre Jazz, Broadway and contemporary tap dance technique, and musical theatre education, and her talents have been showcased in the TONY award-winning production of Irving Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS and on the Broadway cast album released in 2006. She is a proud member of the Actor’s Equity Association and is also an accomplished figure skater and ice dancer.

The BBK mission states that the program uses the performing arts to build healthy bodies and minds, instill discipline, foster teamwork, and develop creative problem-solving skills, and that it trains artists to lead both in and out of the studio. According to this mission, students grow from their first steps to mastering their craft and sharing their experiences with others, and the focus and creativity they develop at BBK contribute to their success in personal, academic, and professional life. The mission also states that part of the leadership approach is the satisfaction and joy students experience as they practice, which keeps them motivated and committed as they work with instructors to become their best selves.

Bay Area Summer Camps and related BBK programs are described as engaging, warm, creative, and educational in parent testimonials. Parents report that children gain new skills, make friends, and participate in private vocal and acting classes over multiple years, and one former student credits the program as important to their path to becoming a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The community involvement description notes that Katie continues her work at schools across California and, through AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE CONSERVATORY, Broadway Babies and Kids, and the non-profit Friends of Broadway Babies and Kids, has made significant strides in making the performing arts accessible to all. Katie’s award-winning musical theatre and Broadway vocal programming have earned acclaim for their excellence and transformative impact on participants.
