America SCORES Bay Area is a free, high-quality youth development program that focuses on building developmental assets through its mix of soccer, poetry, and service-learning. It serves more than 5,000 children at 130 low-income elementary and middle schools in San Francisco and has program locations in multiple Bay Area regions, including San Rafael, Oakland, Hayward, San Jose, Watsonville, West Contra Costa, Daly City, and San Francisco. The organization partners with after-school providers, public schools, and school districts, including many San Francisco elementary and middle schools and community programs such as the Indochinese Housing Development Center, Up on Top After School Program, Salvation Army KROC Center, and Joseph Lee Recreation Center.
America SCORES was started in 1994, and the America SCORES Bay Area affiliate was founded and launched in 2001. The leadership team includes Founder and CEO Colin Schmidt, public school teacher Julie Kennedy from Washington, DC, and Chief Program Officer Yuri Morales. Its mission states that America SCORES Bay Area supports whole child development through the teamwork of soccer, the creativity of poetry, and the compassion of service-learning, and that it inspires and empowers its “poet-athletes” to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged and collaborative students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. The organization notes that it has received awards and recognition. One participant shared, “What I like most about SCORES is that it teaches you to be confident. SCORES coaches support me and they tell me to not give up. SCORES has teachers and friends to cheer you on when you feel like you don't belong.”
