Charlie's Porch Tutoring Center is led by owners and tutors Hannah Pennington and Izzy (Isabel) Pennington. Hannah attended California State University, Channel Islands, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in history, and she also offers limited behavioral support incorporating ideas used in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and other techniques. Izzy attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she majored in Environmental Studies with a focus in environmental justice. The program’s stated goal is to create a learning environment full of kindness, acceptance, growth, and memories.
According to one 3rd grade parent, the center is described as bright, safe, clean, inviting, modern, and full of color and personality, and this parent notes that Hannah is kind, patient, empathetic, compassionate, and provides structure for their autistic son. A 7th grade parent reports that tutors at the center follow the school curriculum directly, know the specific curriculum for each class, set up proactive lesson plans, provide consistent feedback, coach study skills, and use existing homework assignments to support learning, and this parent notes improvements in grades and confidence. A 4th grade parent shares that their child began tutoring at Charlie’s Porch in winter 2023 and describes a change from “needs improvement” to doing well in all subjects, along with a more positive attitude toward school, and states that their child looks forward to working with Izzy each week. A 6th grade parent states that work with Isabel has changed how their son feels about school, with significant grade improvement and increased confidence in all subjects, and expresses thanks for Isabel and Hannah.
