The Alliance Française de Santa Rosa chapter has been operating since 1988. Its stated purpose is to promote French culture and the study of the French language in Sonoma County and surrounding areas, to gather people who want to develop understanding and enjoyment of French language and culture, and to foster friendship and mutual understanding between the United States and France and French-speaking countries through linguistic and cultural exchanges. The organization is an affiliate of the global Fondation Alliance Française and operates as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization with no political or religious affiliations, and it states that it does not discriminate in its activities or operations on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation.

The program’s instructors are described as dedicated and experienced professionals from California and France who are passionate about French language and culture and who emphasize communication through active participation. Alliance Française de Santa Rosa offers classes both in person and on Zoom, and also provides online and in-person conversation groups and causeries, including an Online Causerie for Levels A2/B1 and an In-Person Causerie for Level B2. It also offers Culturethèque, a digital library co-sponsored by the Alliance Française and Institut français, and notes that there is no need to speak French to participate in its rich array of public programs, most of which are in English.

The organization hosts monthly and seasonal community events such as a Winter Market, Beaujolais Nouveau celebration, pétanque lessons, and Bastille Day, as well as a cheese workshop and a botanical workshop. Book Club (Le Cercle Littéraire) meets every other month on second Tuesdays at 3 pm, and Soirée Cinéma is held monthly as an evening screening of a French film in a Santa Rosa theater followed by discussion in English and French. New classrooms at Alliance Française de Santa Rosa feature two comfortable rooms for classes, workshops, meetings, and more.

Testimonials from participants mention enjoying the flexibility and variety of classes, the cheese and botanical workshops, pronunciation lessons, DELF preparation classes, and the supportiveness of teachers and fellow students. One parent notes that their daughter is enjoying a class preparing for the DELF, and another student describes how teachers have helped them get over feeling inhibited in speaking French.
