The Santa Rosa chapter of Alliance Française has been operating since 1988 and is an affiliate of the global Fondation Alliance Française, functioning as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Its stated purpose is to promote French culture and the study of the French language in Sonoma County and surrounding areas, to gather people interested in French language and culture, and to foster friendship and mutual understanding between the United States and France and French-speaking countries through linguistic and cultural exchanges. AFSR instructors are described as dedicated, experienced professionals from California and France who are passionate about French language and culture and emphasize communication through active participation.

Alliance Française de Santa Rosa offers a Culturethèque digital library co-sponsored by the Alliance Française and Institut français, a physical library, and a range of public programs, most of which are in English. The organization states that there is no need to speak French to participate, that it has no political or religious affiliations, and that it follows a non-discrimination policy covering race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, and sexual orientation. Community events include the Winter Market, Beaujolais Nouveau celebration, pétanque lessons, and Bastille Day.

Parent testimonials mention flexibility and variety of classes, enjoyment of teachers, and appreciation of cultural activities such as the cheese and botanical workshops. One parent notes enjoying pronunciation lessons with an instructor named Kate and mentions a daughter’s class preparing for the DELF, and another testimonial credits teachers Kate and Julia and the supportiveness of fellow students with helping the speaker feel less inhibited when speaking French.
