ART for the SOUL of it (Joanie Springer's studio and online via Zoom), 2323 Chanate Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95404
About
ART for the SOUL of it – Loose & Expressive Watermedia Art Classes focuses on loose and expressive watermedia, including watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and mixed media. The program includes private art lessons and group classes that cover color theory, color mixing, value studies, demystifying art supplies, working in series, developing a body of work, and inspiration and creativity.
• Schedule: Group classes meet Monday afternoons from 1:30–3:30pm in person, and Monday and Wednesday from 10am–Noon via Zoom, with all times in Pacific/California time. Private art lessons are 90-minute sessions.
Joanie Springer leads ART for the SOUL of it as an art teacher and artist. Her credentials include an M.A. in Culture and Spirituality from Holy Names University and a B.A. in Literature/Creative Writing from Sonoma State University, and she is a self-taught artist who attends occasional workshops. Since 2009, Joanie has exhibited in galleries both online and in brick-and-mortar spaces, had solo art shows, and had her art published in magazines and on covers, as well as teaching locally and through online art tutorials. Since 2020, she has taught her weekly art classes on Zoom. Her mission centers on staying in touch with joy in her painting process and setting a gently focused goal for each painting rather than letting perfectionism take over.
Group classes are offered both online and in person, with monthly themes that include personal demos, instruction, encouragement, and inspiration. Beginners are welcome, with a recommendation that true beginners start with private classes first. Students can join at any time without missing content. Online students can receive weekly video recordings of each class, available for 14 days, with an option to download, and there is a private Facebook group for online participants to share work and receive feedback. Private 90-minute lessons include a video of the class emailed after the lesson. The classes focus on loose and expressive watermedia techniques. Students who attend online need to have the Zoom app downloaded.
Joanie has shown her art at Red Shoes Gallery since 2018. Testimonials from students describe learning about making colors from primary colors, appreciating Joanie’s encouragement and structured lessons, and note that students feel they learn something new each week and are supported in finding their own style.
