The DREAMS + Tech Initiative gives students access to Design, Research, Engineering, Art, Math, Science, and Technology. The program is part of Casa de Amistad, which offers holistic academic support and guidance for students facing educational and economic hurdles.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
Casa de Amistad began by helping three local children in 1997 and became a nonprofit organization in 2001. Today, Casa de Amistad serves 255 students in grades K–12 on a weekly basis, with free assistance from over 225 volunteers. Its programs include the Kinder To College Initiative flagship long-term program, the Study Companions Program with individual academic mentorship, an Early Literacy Program with structured small-group early childhood education, a Summer Enrichment Program with STEAM-based educational experiences for K–12 students, Career Pathways Workshops for middle and high school students, and the Parents in Action Program with services and workshops for parents using positive parenting techniques. Casa de Amistad also offers the Future Leaders Scholarship for students in the College and Career Pathways program, with more than $250,000 and later more than $300,000 distributed, and reports 100% of students graduating high school and 100% of students enrolled in post-secondary education.
The leadership team includes Nicole Mione-Green, Executive Director; Catalina Beltran, Associate Director of Operations and Parent Coordinator; Corey Ford, Director of Programs; Linda Carter, Student Success Coordinator and Alumni Advisor; and Gabby Conde, Program Coordinator & Social Media Manager. Staff credentials include bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fields such as International Studies, Liberal Studies, English, Psychology, Political Science, Education, Counseling and Guidance, Nonprofit Leadership and Management, and Multiple Subject and BLCAD teaching credentials from institutions including the University of Oregon, California State University San Marcos, UC Berkeley, National University, Point Loma Nazarene University, and the University of San Diego.
Casa de Amistad describes itself as a grassroots non-profit organization grounded in the heart of the North County San Diego community and actively immersed in local communities. It has developed strategic partnerships with municipal institutions, local school districts, and other educational non-profit organizations, and serves students from districts throughout North County Coastal San Diego. Casa states that it offers a welcoming neighborhood campus that is a safe and inclusive place for learning, provides ongoing educational support, opportunities and experiences that place students on a path to a bright and positive future, and strives to leverage strong community connections in pursuit of a better future for San Diego’s most marginalized communities.
