art/work/place offers classes and parties that include Mini Makers projects with new materials, imaginative art projects, and creative activities through both group activities and individual exploration. Students take part in observational drawing practice, still life observational drawing, life drawing, daily sketchbook practice, color wheel study, portrait and pointillism creation, and observation of color and texture and figure casts. They also work on collages, prints, wearable art, small sculptures, printed matter, and party art projects where each student creates a finished art piece, along with exploring Egypt and Islamic Art in an art history context.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are 90 minutes long once a week; parties are 2 hours long with 90 minutes of instruction
• Price: $45 per guest for 2 hour parties with a maximum of 20 guests and a minimum of 6 guests for one instructor or 12 guests for two instructors; tuition is $172 per month with a 10% discount for multiple enrollments in the same household
art/work/place describes its mission as providing art education that exceeds other arts programs, with a philosophy of “Work hard, Play hard,” combining a foundation in fine art principles with encouragement of creativity, and a focus on convenience, customer service, and community development. Mini Makers class sizes are kept small, with no more than 6 students per teacher, and students have ongoing enrollment and can begin classes at any time, with tuition auto-charged on the first of the month, prorated for mid-month starts, and non-refundable. The program has a makeup class policy with credits valid for 60 days, makeup credits for holiday closures, and a no photo policy in the studio. All programs are non-sectarian and available to charter school students, and art/work/place currently works with Sky Mountain Charter and Blue Ridge Academy, with charter school families asked to purchase tuition by the full calendar month.
All instructors are academically trained, degreed, and active artists. Youth Lesson 1 is taught by Billy Frolov, an American artist living and working in Burbank, California, whose work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions on both coasts and published in New American Paintings. Youth Lesson 2 is taught by Chris Youseff, who is Art Center educated and works as an artist and illustrator in Southern California. Mini Makers, Youth Lesson 1, Stop Motion!, and Summer Art Intensives are taught by Ruby Hannan, who holds a BFA in Film, Animation, and Studio Art from the Rhode Island School of Design and has six years of experience teaching first through fourth grade students at BASIS Independent Brooklyn. Mini Makers is also taught by Anayantzin Sanchez, who received a BA in Elementary Education from Humboldt State with a minor in Studio Art.
The Youth 1 curriculum alternates between observational drawing practice and experimental creative projects, with a final observational drawing project every two months and daily sketchbook practice. The Youth 2 curriculum circulates through five lesson types, each focusing on a specific aspect of fine art training and including new areas of art history in each cycle. The studio is described as an allergy free zone, with snacks eaten outside and handwashing required if a snack with nuts was eaten before class. For parties, art/work/place provides the location, basic decoration, goody bags, materials, and 90 minutes of instruction, while the client provides the food, and party times are offered on Saturdays from 6pm–8pm and Sundays from 3:30pm–5:30pm.
