About

EnActe School of Drama is part of EnActe Arts, Inc. and focuses on theatre and drama education. The EnActe School of Drama (ESOD) educates over 1,000 students annually and is connected to a larger community of more than 400 artists of 17 different ethnicities, including playwrights, directors, actors, designers, dancers, musicians, music composers, teaching artists, and arts administrators.

EnActe School of Drama operates within EnActe, which has produced 38 plays in 12 years and notes that over 90% of the plays produced are new work. EnActe describes itself as America’s largest South Asian and only national South Asian theater company, with over 40 productions, 80% of which are new works. Some ESOD students are now employees of EnActe and run creative programs for the next generation.

The organization’s mission is to embrace Eastern and Western traditions of storytelling by developing and presenting thought-provoking stories that put South Asian voices in a global context, and to act as an inclusive platform for developing diverse talent in the performance arts. EnActe states that it values all identities, backgrounds, and abilities and strives to engage people of varied race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, and socioeconomic status. Its stated values are Belonging, Challenging, Empowering, and Collaborating, and it commits to diversity of thought, action, and representation while fostering inclusive, multi-disciplinary talent.

EnActe notes that it is highly collaborative and describes its work as amplifying South Asian and other minority voices through storytelling, provoking dialogue, and promoting the benefits of theater to society. It is a proud member of CAATA (Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists) and an elected member of NNPN (National New Play Network). The organization identifies itself as an incubator whose talent has gone on to Broadway and Hollywood, and it states that it celebrates the past, is mindful of the present, and gives voice to the future. Vinita Sud Belani is the founder of EnActe.
