The Suzuki Music Program of Los Angeles (SMPLA) was started in 1974 by the late Idell Low and the late Elizabeth Mills. The program is now headed by Co-Directors Robin Johnson, Melodie Tunick-Zide, and Molly White. The Suzuki Program of Los Angeles (SMPLA) is an association of teachers who have been trained in the Suzuki Method and philosophy on violin, viola, and guitar. Its stated purpose includes teaching violin and other string instruments to children using the Suzuki Method, ideas, and philosophy, and training teachers to use the Suzuki Method, ideas, and philosophy. The program describes the Suzuki Method as the “mother tongue” method and has an open door policy in which any Suzuki student may join SMPLA regardless of which teacher they are studying with privately.
The Suzuki Music Program of Los Angeles states that it provides a positive environment where children find joy in making music together, where they are eager to learn and motivated to practice, and where they reach a high level of competence in the Suzuki repertoire and in other musical genres. Teachers teach private lessons in the extended San Fernando Valley and group lessons (Workshop) in Tarzana. SMPLA is now an approved vendor for ilead, Blue Ridge Academy, and Gorman Learning Center. For teacher members, SMPLA uses its non-profit status for events, provides event insurance for students, their parents and teachers, offers access to a background check and abuse training program, and offers opportunities to collaborate with other teachers on teaching methodology and events.
