Starfish Tennis was founded in 2005 by head professional Vasile Beches and program coordinator Mindy Beches. Vasile is the founder of Starfish Tennis and has worked in the South Bay since 1990, with over 30 years of teaching experience and 25 years of Marine League and USTA team coaching. Vasile is USPTR and USPTA certified, a Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) member, a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Level 1 Pro, and a United States Tennis Association (USTA) High-Performance Coach. Mindy is the co-founder of Starfish Tennis and serves as Program Coordinator and USTA Assistant Pro.
The Starfish Tennis mission states that it offers professional tennis instruction where values and people always come first, with a comprehensive tennis program that offers quality tennis instruction in a fun and safe setting. The mission also states that tennis instruction is a fun nurturing process that develops tennis skills in a natural progression and that the Starfish Tennis system ensures that every student will improve all their skills and enjoy tennis for the rest of their lives.
Starfish Tennis conducts after school programs at elementary schools in the South Bay and partners with the Southern California Tennis Association to provide free lessons to children in the South Bay. In these on-site after school programs, Starfish Tennis sets up nets and courts on the blacktop and provides racquets and materials for every child. The program uses the United States Tennis Association’s “Net Generation” program in instruction and uses size-appropriate balls, racquets, nets, and courts.
Vasile received the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) Professional of the Year award in 2003. One testimonial from former player Alison Ramos states that Vasile was her coach when she was eight years old, that he taught her how to hit a slice and a lob, and that he was one of the reasons she earned a full-ride tennis scholarship to USC. Another testimonial from Justin Lee states that Vasile coached his entire high school’s CIF winning team, that many of his fondest childhood memories were learning tennis with Vasile and meeting life-long friends from Vasile’s workouts, and that he believes better sportsmanship would be seen if more kids grew up with coaches like Vasile.
