About

Gateway Mountain Center offers field science, outdoor adventures, and mindfulness practices for young people. The program includes retreats, school programs, an adventure camp, Camp Donner Summit, climbing camps, and YEA! Camps. It also offers therapeutic mentoring and peer support specialist services.

Gateway Mountain Center was founded in 2006 by Peter Mayfield, a successful leader, pioneer, and innovator in mountain sports programs. Its mission statement is that Gateway Mountain Center brings together the transformative power of human connection and nature immersion to help young people learn, heal, and thrive. The organization uses an innovative, science-informed method called 4Roots for Growing a Human and offers a clinically supervised, nature-based, therapeutic mentoring program. It operates holistic programs that tap into the transformational power of nature both as a teacher and as medicine and runs the 4Roots Youth Wellness Center as a community-based wellness center. Gateway Mountain Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation operating under a Special Use Permit from Tahoe National Forest. It works with schools, collaborates with community groups and youth organizations, and offers services at its community wellness center. It partners with schools, community groups, and youth organizations to offer environmental education and works with the families and communities of the youth it serves. The organization states a commitment to equity, including meeting families wherever they are in their financial circumstances. It respectfully acknowledges the Maidu (Nisenan), Miwok, and Wá∙šiw (Washoe) tribes and their elders both past and present, on whose unceded lands it provides its programming. Programs are offered in Truckee/Tahoe and San Francisco locations.
