James Marshall Parent Nursery School (JMPNS), established in 1954, operates as a nonprofit parent nursery school where parents and formal teachers come together to guide a child's early learning experience. It is the only cooperative preschool in West Sacramento and uses a parent cooperative model of early education in which enrolled families have ownership. The program offers evening adult classes for parents.

The director/teacher, Erin Hinton, holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Alma College, ECE units from Sac City College, and a master’s degree in education from Northcentral University. JMPNS states that it is an early education experience rooted in play, developmentally appropriate practices, and relevant early childhood research, and that it values kindness, diversity, equity, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.

JMPNS is certified as a quality early childhood program by both Quality Counts Yolo and West Sacramento Home Run. The program states that it does not discriminate by race, color, national or ethnic origin, creed, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability or status, and that it admits members of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to members at the school. It also states that it does not discriminate on any of these bases in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school-administered programs. The school acknowledges the land it occupies as the traditional home of the Patwin people.

Parent and child comments about the program include: “This is the coolest school ever!” (Zach, age 4) and “I just like this place so much.” (Evan, age 3). Other parent feedback includes: “This is the best kept preschool secret. I love the opportunities to be involved and the enriching environment it provides to my preschooler.” (Shareen Wells); “My daughter went here and it was such an amazing experience! It's parent run and I met so many wonderful people that have become long time friends. I highly recommend!” (Sarah Elliot); and “I love this preschool. It is so good to be able to be a part of my kid's early education. Plus I meet other people going through the same stuff at the same time. Mrs. Hinton is wonderful and helps us learn what age appropriate behaviors are and how to help with other kids too. I couldn’t choose a better spot for our family.” (Leslie Setser-Pfleger).
