Hills Alive Outreach & Junior Ranger Programs include docent-led field trip programs for schools, ranger-led hikes, and general presentations about Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority activities. The Junior Ranger Program features a two-hour hike in the hills that focuses on conservation, nature education, park stewardship, and wilderness skills development. The program also offers themed interactive activity-based hikes in the Preserve, take-home crafts, and after-school programs for troop members in grades K–5, including Girl Scout Daisy “Clean Up the World” (Rosie Petal Badge) for grades K–1, Girl Scout Brownies “Bug School” (Bug Try-it Badge) for grades 2–3, and Girl Scout Junior “Flower Power” (Flower Badge) for grades 4–5.

• Schedule: Programs are 2 hours in length; reservations for the upcoming school year open on the first of August.

All school programs are aligned with California Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, as well as other academic areas. Programs are activity-based and interactive, use multi-sensory teaching techniques, and lead children to learn about habitats, plant and animal life cycles, food chains, Native Americans, and related topics. Nature education programs are developed to correlate with Next Generation Science Standards adopted by California in September 2013, to complement teachers’ in-class lessons. Hills Alive provides opportunities for students to have direct experiences with the living environment by bringing nature education and hands-on science education outdoors.
Programs are implemented by trained docents and skilled staff. The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority, which runs these programs, came into existence in 1994 and manages approximately 3,892 acres of preserved public open space, of which 1,903 acres are owned by the Habitat Authority, with a goal of ultimately preserving over 4,000 acres. The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority is dedicated to the acquisition, restoration, and management of open space in the Puente Hills for preservation of the land in perpetuity, with the primary purpose to protect biological diversity, and additionally endeavors to provide opportunities for outdoor education and low-impact recreation.
These Hills Alive programs are partially funded by Hills for Everyone, Kohl’s, and other donors. The Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority is a public agency Joint Powers Authority with a Board of Directors consisting of the City of Whittier, County of Los Angeles, Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, and a member representing Hacienda Heights, who is a member of the Hacienda Heights Improvement Association.
