Piña Reading Academy provides individualized support for neurodivergent learners, including individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and other learning differences. Services include building functional literacy for safety and independence, such as recognizing important signs, reading community words, understanding personal information, and following written directions. The program also supports daily living skills like routines, organization, communication, and self-management strategies, along with life skills in money awareness, time management, problem-solving, and social-emotional understanding.

Melinda Piña M.Ed. is the owner and operator of Piña Reading Academy and is a Reading Specialist and credentialed teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University Long Beach, a Master’s Degree in Advanced Teaching Skills from the University of La Verne, and a Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential from the University of California Los Angeles. She has over 34 years of teaching experience, including 22 years of public school teaching in her own classroom and over 10 years in the private sector at Piña Reading Academy. Each tutoring session is designed and taught by Melinda Piña, and she is the only instructor students work with.

Students are assessed and grouped according to their academic level, and once the standards for that grade level are met, the child moves to the next level. The instructional plan supports academic growth and helps parents monitor progress. Some grade level groups close registration when capacity is met. Parents are never required to sign any contracts, there are no registration fees, students are not given any work to take home, and parents are always given the opportunity to watch a lesson and are often invited to participate.

Piña Reading Academy also offers professional development in oral reading fluency, spelling, comprehension, vocabulary, student engagement, phonics, and phonemic awareness. Melinda works with school districts to support administrators and teachers in providing specialized services and works with district staff and parents to create appropriate IEP goals. She participates in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and SST meetings and works with individual students who require specific reading and math instruction aligned to the student’s IEP. The program’s approach is centered on skill-building, functional independence, and meaningful progress, with instruction tailored to each student’s unique strengths and needs. One parent shared, “Mrs. Piña is one of the best tutors I've ever met she makes customs plans for each child. Both of my kids have done a complete 180 on their reading.”
