About

The Whittier Area Literacy Council of Boys & Girls Club of Whittier offers free, individualized children’s literacy tutoring through one-on-one tutoring sessions in basic literacy. The program tutors children in reading, writing, and spelling, and also involves tutors in family literacy events, community outreach, and occasional office work. Students qualify for the program through an initial assessment that determines needs in word reading, sentence comprehension, and spelling, and the program works with students in third grade and up.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: One-on-one tutoring sessions twice a week in structured intervals, with typical options between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM on weekdays; tutors commit two hours per week for at least one year
• Price: One-on-one tutoring sessions are free of charge

Since 1962, the Whittier Area Literacy Council, now part of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, has provided free tutoring. The mission of the Whittier Area Literacy Council of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier is to build a stronger, more literate community by connecting those who can help with those who need it most through free, individualized tutoring in basic literacy for children. The program partners with Rio Hondo College and Whittier College to offer work-study opportunities, and work-study tutors assist with family literacy events, community outreach, and occasional office work. Tutors receive comprehensive training, support, and materials through in-office training at the literacy center, and tutors must pass a background check and provide TB test results. The program includes a Leader in Training (LIT) Teen Tutor program with cohorts accepted throughout the year.
