Every program is taught or supported by industry professionals who reflect and affirm the identities of the youth, and programs are intentionally designed by educators and industry professionals. The programs are led by Black tech professionals, including mentors Afam Achebe and Mike Manasseh. Black Boys Code Programs has reached over 18,000 Black youth nationwide, supported by 4,800+ volunteer hours and 30+ educational partners, and is part of a community across 12+ chapters, with a Girl’s Program and a USA Program. Its mission is to create a future where Black youth lead, create, and innovate in a tech-driven world, with AI and Robotics at the forefront, through accessible learning and culturally grounded mentorship. One parent notes that the classes supported a broader understanding of mathematical and coding concepts and highlights teacher engagement with students, while another parent describes gains in logical reasoning, problem solving, creativity, and confidence in a student-centered environment. A 13-year-old participant from Vancouver, Michael, shares that meeting professionals who look like him and have succeeded in tech has changed his view of what is possible for his future and that he has learned new coding skills and feels supported by a community that believes in him.
