The Evergreen Park & Recreation District was authorized in January 1969 by a vote of area residents and was originally named the Evergreen Metropolitan Recreation and Park District before being renamed in 1992. At that time, the stated purpose of the District was to provide recreational opportunities to its residents and construct a community center with a swimming pool. Evergreen Park & Recreation District is a Special District created under state law to perform a specific purpose and serves approximately 23,000 people within its boundaries, covering 50,000 acres (78 square miles) in the foothills west of Denver. The District serves the communities of Evergreen, Bergen Park, Indian Hills, Kittredge, and Marshdale, and its Board of Directors is made up of five individuals elected from the District at large. The Evergreen Park & Recreation District partners with a number of organizations in the community to provide services to its citizens. EPRD prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital or family status, and people of all abilities are invited to use EPRD recreation facilities or register for any EPRD recreational program, provided they meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
