About
Expedition Girls Backpacking Colorado is a one-week backpacking program where campers go backpacking and hiking, practice navigation skills using a map and compass, and learn gear management. Campers pitch tents, cook meals on backcountry stoves, and take part in backcountry cooking, campfire chats, stories around the campfire, teambuilding, and games during downtime. Campers carry group equipment, food, and personal gear, including an additional 10–25 lbs of food or group gear, and sleep in backpacking tents with no access to showers, toilets, or running water, with all water filtered from local sources for drinking, hand washing, and food preparation.
• Ages: 12–14 years old
• Schedule: One-week sessions with Sunday check-in at 10:00 AM and Friday check-out at 3:00 PM
• Price: One Week Price $1,325; DEN Airport Camp Shuttle $50 one-way or $100 round-trip; Backpack Rental $40; Avid4 Merch with delivery at camp, prices vary (tax included)
In this program, campers learn camping basics such as bear protocols and water treatment systems, how to set up, break down, and efficiently pack compact cooking, cleaning, and sleeping gear, and Leave No Trace principles including how to properly dispose of human waste through burying in the ground or carrying it out. Days can include longer hike days and layover days with light day packs to nearby peaks or high alpine lakes, and every activity starts with a discussion about risks, prevention, and response. Expedition Girls Backpacking Colorado is described as an empowering and fun all-female identifying environment welcoming all experience levels, with a focus on improving self-confidence through an all-female backpacking team, and has a Difficulty Rating of 2 – Single Sport Specialty and a Wilderness Rating of 3 – Backcountry Wilderness Camping. Campers are in a tight-knit group of up to 13 campers and 2 skilled, supportive instructors, have access to top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids, and can rent a backpack if needed.
Avid4 Instructors are all 18 and older, are described as insatiable outdoors experts with serious safety and skills training, and are noted by parents as the number one point of positive feedback. The leadership team includes Founder David Secunda, a former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Avid4 Adventure states a mission that centers on the transformative power of the outdoors, with kids building confidence, making new friends, and mastering skills in activities such as paddling, biking, rock climbing, and hiking, and notes that its programs evolve with campers from age 3 to 17. The organization is accredited by the American Camp Association, is a Certified B Corp, and has been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps, and it operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Parent testimonials describe Avid4 Adventure as a well-run program where kids learn new outdoor skills, with one parent noting that their child learned to ride a bike without training wheels during camp and another sharing that their kids were active every day and still talk about camp over a month later. The Avid4 Adventure Guarantee promises an authentic outdoor adventure, highly trained and professional staff, increased confidence, and a customer experience that exceeds expectations, with a free next camp if these promises are not met.
