Classes are taught by professional artists and educators. Capitol Hill Arts Workshop was founded in 1972 and has been building community through the arts since 1972. In its history, Capitol Hill Arts Workshop has never turned a person or organization away for inability to pay. CHAW’s mission of “building community through the arts” is rooted in the belief that art and community-building are synergistic. CHAW programs are made possible in part by support from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, and CHAW’s constituency spans a wide income range but is primarily concentrated in Ward 6. In a typical year CHAW serves approximately 5,000 people directly through in-house programs and outreach, and indirectly through non-profits that use CHAW as their home base, as well as through partnerships with community organizations and schools. CHAW is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all applicable federal and local fair employment practices laws. Capitol Hill Arts Workshop studios, theater, and gallery are accessible only via stairs and are not accessible by either an elevator or ramp.
