• Ages: 3–18 years old
Founded in 1957, Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has grown into a statewide network of residential campuses and summer camps over more than 68 years. The residential campuses operate under a four-pillar philosophy of Work, Study, Play and Pray, and “ranchers” live in homes with a married couple, referred to as a “mom and pop,” in a traditional family environment. Counseling services and family engagement are part of the residential care program. Staff are trained in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). The Boys Ranch campus has the capacity to accommodate 82 boys and girls ages 3–20, and youth there attend school either on campus or in the local public school system in the Live Oak community, and each boy and girl participates in a structured work program. Youth Ranch Safety Harbor is home to sibling groups and uses the same Work, Study, Play and Pray philosophy with a family model of a mom and pop in a cottage with the youth. The Polk Sheriffs Charities Scholarship House was converted in 2019 to a home for young adults transitioning out of state foster care or residential care programs and is designed to help young adults learn independent living skills in a safe learning environment. At the Scholarship House, a residential life coach lives on campus, serves as a mentor, and helps with “firsts” of adulthood such as opening a bank account or purchasing a vehicle, while students are encouraged to find employment, manage their college or trade school schedule, and learn how to manage their finances; the Scholarship House fills a gap in the lives of youth who grew up in challenging environments. The Don Genung Training and Resource Center provides Trauma-Informed Care Services, including employee training, TBRI evidence-based trainings, and implementation strategies, and aims to equip law enforcement, teachers, biological, adoptive and foster parents, churches, and systems of care with these services to help create trauma informed communities. The Mission of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is to prevent delinquency and develop resilient, productive, and law-abiding citizens. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches residential campuses are described as a nationally renown network of residential campuses, and the Youth Ranches offers nationally recognized services to at-risk youth. Events throughout Florida help raise funds to support the work of the organization. The summer camping program has three camp locations for children ages 10 to 15.
