ArtSouth’s artists-as-teachers and professionals in the field lead the after school, summer camp, no-school holiday and weekend workshops, field trips, and year-round classes for children ages 4–17. ArtSouth’s award-winning artists-as-teachers embody a wide range of skills, talents, and expertise, and their exhibitions and performances have received critical acclaim. ArtSouth’s youth educational programs have received numerous awards, honors, and grants.
The mission of ArtSouth is to inspire understanding and appreciation of the arts for historically underrepresented communities by providing inclusive cultural access to exhibitions, performances, and educational programs. Programs are structured so they can be easily accessed with consideration for participants of all abilities, ethnicities, and languages, and most programs are free or have minimal costs. ArtSouth provides inclusive cultural access and community enrichment for historically underrepresented communities and has evolved as a landmark arts center in culturally under-served Miami Dade County neighborhoods.
Since 2000, ArtSouth has impacted thousands of families, and in 2013 it expanded from Homestead into a more central location to reach an expanded population. For the past 20 years, ArtSouth has collaborated with community partners such as Chapman Charities, The Rotary Club, The City of South Miami, Miami Dade College, Florida Department of Corrections, Silent Victims of Crime, Exchange For Change, Village of Palmetto Bay, City of Homestead, Chamber South, Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce, Branches, Inc, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and South Miami Parks and Recreation. Seasonal visual arts workshops boost neighborhood activity and social interchange, and monthly exhibitions expose the community to local emerging artists and provide a free venue for artists to exhibit and sell their work.
ArtSouth’s broader programs also include age-friendly Visual Arts classes and workshops in painting, drawing, and mixed media for senior adults regardless of skill level and experience. The Art Behind Bars program at Everglades Correctional Institution offers inmates access to high-quality visual arts education and organized classes in a cooperative studio environment. ArtSouth is permanently established in the Historic Perrine Community House in Palmetto Bay, Florida, and offers seasonal visual arts workshops at the historic Thalatta Estate in Palmetto Bay, with any resulting revenue used to contribute to ArtSouth’s programs for families and children who lack access to the arts because of economic constraints.
ArtSouth’s leadership team includes Board Chair Janis Klein Cohen, Board Secretary Beatriz Herrmann, Art Director Maximo Caminero, and Board Treasurer Wendy Robbins. The founders are Ellie Schneiderman and the late I. Stanley Levine.
