U.S. Taido Association was founded in 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia, and has been in the North Metro Atlanta area for more than 40 years. The association has been owned and operated by the Uchida family since it first opened in 1975. The original school was located on Buford Highway in Atlanta, and the association has been on Spalding Drive near Holcomb Bridge Road for the past 20+ years.
The leadership team includes Founder and President Mits Uchida, a 7th Degree Black Belt; Director and Head Instructor Mitsuaki Uchida, a 6th Degree Black Belt; and Associate Head Instructor Brendan Dumont, a 5th Degree Black Belt. Black belts have a minimum of 5 years of training before assisting with classes. Mits Uchida studied under the creator and grand master of Taido, Dr. Seiken Shukumine.
Taido is described as the modern style of karate, using dynamic techniques and footwork for the purpose of self-defense. Taido utilizes an atmosphere of teamwork and emphasizes a “Best Effort” philosophy. The essence of Taido is described as using training for the development and benefit of both self and society. Taido differs from other martial arts and forms of karate in that its techniques emphasize three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional movement, and it is described as a scientific martial art developed to meet the needs of modern society. Taido’s techniques have been developed so that boys, girls, men, and women regardless of age can practice without undue concern about previous level of physical fitness or conditioning. Class divisions are according to ability, with 8 different children’s classes and 8 different teen and adult classes, and the program emphasizes a “never give up” spirit. Taido enables students to learn at their own pace without the pressure of affecting others’ progress.
U.S. Taido Association promotes Japanese cultural exchange by teaching students about the origins and history of karate, using Japanese training methods, and organizing competition trips to Japan. Students learn to count, pronounce, and understand skills in Japanese. The school’s “Team USA” has competed in more than 10 international tournament championships in Japan and Finland and has been highly successful in all competitions. Both the Japanese press and television broadcast networks in the U.S. have recognized Taido as a martial art with “Philosophical Depth” and “Creativity.”
U.S. Taido Association enjoys an outstanding reputation built on a strong commitment to the area and its residents. Taido emphasizes family values and involvement in the community, and many Taido families have multiple members taking Taido at the same time, which builds shared training experiences. Students are taught to apply positive aspects of Taido to their personal life in an effort to affect society in a positive way. For over forty years, U.S. Taido’s headquarters has been continuously located in the metro Atlanta area, with satellite schools in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, at the University of Georgia, and at Mississippi State University. The school has become a well respected institute in the Atlanta community. The annual Summer Camp is held at beaches in South Carolina or Florida, where students, parents, and family members practice on the beach, take belt tests, and celebrate together.
