CYT Chicago McHenry Chapter Classes and Camps offers drama, voice, dance, musical theater, comedy/improv, stage combat, stage makeup, specialty classes, and voice/choir. Summer camps and classes also include craft workshops, theme-related devotionals, team competitions, and showcase performances for family and friends.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Weekly 2-hour classes that run for 9–10 consecutive weeks across three sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) during the school year
CYT Chicago McHenry Chapter Classes and Camps is part of an after-school theater arts training program for students ages 5–18 serving Illinois and Wisconsin. Instructors are professionals, qualified in teaching and/or performing. Enrolled students ages 8–18 have the opportunity to audition, perform, or work behind the scenes in Broadway-style musicals performed for the community, and each production stars an auditioned cast of students enrolled in current performing arts classes. Summer programs for ages 5–18 include week-long musical theater day camps and overnight camp that culminate in a showcase performance for family and friends, and every camper gets the opportunity to perform on stage. CYT Chicago produces numerous Broadway-style musicals each year in areas located in Illinois and Wisconsin, and shows are described as appropriate for the entire family.
Christian Youth Theater’s stated mission is to develop character and creativity through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting Jesus. CYT Chicago has grown to include nine chapters throughout northern Illinois and southeast Wisconsin. In 1997, Tom and Bonnie Bienert founded the first branch of CYT outside California, and by its 25th anniversary season in 2022, CYT Chicago had produced more than 460 theatrical productions, with over 35,000 participating families and more than one million patrons. CYT Chicago lists Vicky Lewis as Class Coordinator and Jenni Miller as Production Coordinator, with Justin Parks as Artistic Director. CYT Chicago notes that it values family and community, and that thousands of families attend its Broadway-style musicals every year. Programs beyond classes, camps, and shows include HYPE, Improvapalooza, Music Fest, Experience 150 Dance, and the yearly CYT EXPO.
