About

Camps offers organized activities that include games, songs, stories, art projects, lessons, movies, special events, and entertainment and/or special guests. Children may drive pedal cars through the streets of a miniature Western Springs, drive around Safety Village in safety cars, make a real 911 call, hop up on a fire truck, police car, and ambulance, and practice escaping from a fire safety house. The program also includes lifesaving lessons presented by Cinders the Fire Dog Show, Beltman, Buckle Bear, McGruff, Sparky, and uniformed police and fire department personnel, and camps are held at an indoor location on rain days.

• Ages: 3–8 years old
• Schedule: Two 3-week sessions are offered for summer, and the late summer session is 3 weeks.

The Recreation Department offers various camps throughout the summer and late summer, including JUST FOR TOTS CAMP for ages 3.5 to 5 years, TOWER CAMP for ages 5.5 to 8 years, and SAFETY VILLAGE for children entering kindergarten and first grade in the fall. JUST FOR TOTS CAMP takes place in a neighborhood park with summer themes, and TOWER CAMP includes organized activities designed to promote socialization, self-esteem, creativity, and fun, with themes that add excitement to games, art projects, songs, stories, special events, and entertainment and/or special guests. SAFETY VILLAGE teaches children 55 different facets of safety using pedal cars, lessons, songs, movies, live characters, and visits from favorite safety characters and robots, and there is an option to sign up for a Safety Village/Tower Camp Combo Camp that combines Safety Village with a three-hour camp for three weeks. Safety Days in the Fall Brochure open Safety Village’s gates to 4-year-old children to explore the Village and learn safety skills with the Fire and Police Departments.

Staff consists of a combination of college and high school students, and all staff are CPR-trained and receive a first aid review. All campers are asked to bring a labeled backpack each day with a peanut-free snack, water bottle, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue, and to wear gym shoes and clothing suited for active play and messy art projects.
