About
Constellation Stage & Screen Education Classes & Summer Camps offers acting, musical theater, moviemaking, and comedy activities, along with performance-based experiences such as productions of The Little Mermaid and The Odyssey. Campers take part in auditioning, casting, table reads and table work, blocking and staging, rehearsing, and adding technical elements like costumes, props, wigs, lights, and sound. Some sessions focus on themed experiences such as Dragon Dreams, Unicorn Universe, Mermaid Mystery, Phoenix Fantasy, Pegasus Playground, and Fairy Folklore, as well as creating mini-movies by planning, building, shooting, and editing films using smartphone cameras and editing applications, and exploring songs of Broadway and beyond with musicality, vocal performance, movement, stage etiquette, and musical storytelling.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Summer camps run in week-long Monday–Friday sessions from 9:00am–4:00pm.
• Price: Several summer camps list a cost of $315.
Camps are led by experienced professional teaching artists, a professional filmmaker, and a professional musical theater educator. Theater Playground for Littles: A Mythical Creature Quest is described as an expanded version of Constellation’s Theater Playground program for rising 1st–3rd graders, and Broadway Beginnings and Broadway Beginnings Abridged are described as introductions to musical theater for young children. Constellation Stage & Screen offers year-long classes, summer camps, workshops, after-school programs, in-school residencies, and special student-only weekday matinee performances, and its Film Department produces short film projects shot in Indiana and offers year-round filmmaking classes and summer camps for all ages. The Film Department also presents interactive film screenings of cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Constellation operates a Dinner Theater for Kids at the PB&J Cafe where young theatergoers have a meal during the performance and leave with autographs from characters.
Constellation Stage & Screen was established in 2022 as a result of a three-way merger between Bloomington Playwright’s Project, Cardinal Stage, and Pigasus Institute. It serves the Bloomington community and beyond through the production of professional theater and film, educational programs, and venue management, and impacts the national performing arts industry through new work development. It is described as Bloomington IN’s professional theater and film company, serves the Bloomington community and beyond, and is the management organization for two downtown arts venues and a gallery, contributing to civic vitality through productions, community events, and educational initiatives. Constellation Stage & Screen states that it believes all people are deserving of respect, empathy, safety, and inclusion, and that it connects audiences through world-class theater and film.
