About
Jacobs Academy is connected with the Jacobs School of Music, which includes more than three dozen ensembles covering many types and genres of music. Performance is part of the curriculum in all academic programs at the Jacobs School of Music, which presents more than 1,100 performances per year.
The Jacobs School of Music has more than 190 full-time faculty members in residence, including internationally celebrated performers, scholars, and pedagogues of music leaders. Many top musicians and scholars visit each year to give master classes and guest lectures, or to serve as visiting artistic directors, conductors, and teachers. The school has more than 1,500 students from all 50 states and as many as 55 countries, and more than 17,000 alumni including award-winning composers, scholars, dancers, educators, performers, and music industry professionals. The William and Gayle Cook Music Library houses more than 1,000,000 catalogued items and is recognized as one of the largest academic music libraries in the United States.
For nearly a century, the institution has been known for its excellence in performance, artistry, and collaboration, and its mission statement notes a belief in the inherent value of a creative life. Thomas Kernan serves as the Ted Jones Assistant Dean for Artistic Operations and is part of the leadership connected with Jacobs’ performance outreach across Indiana. One student described the jazz program by saying, “The biggest strength about the jazz program here at Jacobs is the mentorship that you get from the professors. I feel each of them care a lot about me as an individual.”
