About

Indianapolis Children’s Choir – Music At Play (Early Childhood Program) gives young children music classes that focus on a beginning musical foundation and early choral experiences. As they grow within the organization, children can take part in choral music performance, performing in choirs, touring for national and international performances, recording CDs and videos, performing live national anthems, and taking part in events such as the Angels Sing holiday concert and the professional children’s opera performance The Trio of Minuet.

• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
• Schedule: Each week, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir holds 110 rehearsals and music classes.

The Music At Play early childhood program serves children 18 months of age through kindergarten with a beginning musical foundation, and when singers are in kindergarten they move to the Foundations Choir where they start learning how to be part of a performing choir. The Preparatory Choir program is a non-auditioned experience for singers in grades 1 through 3, and six performing choirs include singers from grades 4 through 12 in choirs ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a structured way to explore their musical talents, and regional affiliate choirs meet in Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson counties and at Butler University. Each year, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir serves more than 2,500 young people from nearly 20 counties, more than 360 schools, and 56 school districts, and the Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir and Anderson Area Children’s Choir extend musical experiences to students from preschool through at least grade 9 and up to grade 12.

Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is led by Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. The organization states that its mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. The choir has produced 15 CDs, including collaborations with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos, In Endless Song and Lives in Tune: The Legacy of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, that commemorate major milestones. The ICC has performed on every continent except Antarctica and has often been selected by blind audition to perform for national professional music associations, including multiple national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

The ICC regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles, and has performed at events such as Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, and the opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. The choir’s Angels Sing holiday concert is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR, and the choir performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. Testimonials from event partners and audience members describe the choir as organized and professional, note that songs have been a strong fit for partner organizations, and report many compliments about the performances.
