About
Indianapolis Children’s Choir – Music At Play (Early Childhood Program) offers music classes that give young children a beginning musical foundation. Children take part in choral experiences and music education that connect to the broader Indianapolis Children’s Choir program, which includes performing in choirs, choral music performance, touring, recording CDs and videos, performing live national anthems, performing at professional conferences and events, and holiday concerts.
• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir was founded in 1986 by Henry Leck and is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. Its mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. The Music At Play early childhood program offers children 18 months of age through kindergarten a beginning musical foundation, and Music At Play classes are held at several locations around Indianapolis. The Foundations Choir is for singers in kindergarten where they begin their choral journey and learn how to be part of a performing choir, and the Preparatory Choir program for singers in grades 1 through 3 is a non-auditioned experience. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents, and six performing choirs include singers from grades 4 through 12 in choirs ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles. Each week, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir holds 110 rehearsals and music classes and presents its own Concert Season each year, including the Angels Sing holiday concert, which is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR.
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir serves more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years each year, with participants coming from nearly 20 counties, more than 360 schools, and 56 school districts. The organization offers regional affiliate choirs as part of its Community Outreach program in multiple central Indiana communities, and related programs in Columbus and Anderson offer musical experiences to students from preschool through at least grade 9 and up to grade 12. ICC singers have performed at events such as Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, Super Bowl XLVI, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, and many other major civic and sporting events. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has performed by blind audition for national professional music associations, has sung for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI. The choir has produced 15 CDs, including collaborations with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos that commemorated major milestones, and its music can be found on online platforms such as Amazon Music, iTunes, and Spotify. Testimonials from event partners and audience members describe the choir as organized and professional, praise the performances at conferences and special events, and highlight the impact of founder Henry Leck and the experience of singers in the program.
