Founded in 1986 by Henry Leck, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. The mission of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. The programs serve more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years each year, with participants coming from nearly 20 counties, more than 360 schools, and 56 school districts. The Music At Play early childhood program offers children 18 months of age through kindergarten a beginning musical foundation, and the Preparatory Choir program is a non-auditioned experience for singers in grades 1 through 3. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents, and six performing choirs include singers from grades 4 through 12 in choirs ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles. The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 9, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir is a division of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 12.

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir performs in various professional settings and regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles. Singers have performed for Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations and events including The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and many major sporting events. The choir has often performed by blind audition for national professional music associations including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The Angels Sing holiday concert at the historic Second Presbyterian Church is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has produced 15 CDs, including recordings with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos, In Endless Song and Lives in Tune: The Legacy of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which commemorated major milestones. The choir’s music can be found on online music platforms such as Amazon Music, iTunes, and Spotify, and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir has performed on every continent except Antarctica. The choir has performed at many major sporting events throughout Indianapolis, including Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, where it performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016, the 2004 FINA World Swimming Championships, the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship Game, the US Grand Prix/Formula One, the Solheim Cup International Tournament, and the Indy 500 Festival Parade.

Testimonials describe the Indianapolis Children’s Choir as a powerful part of events and note the organization and song choices at performances for groups such as Eskenazi Health, Meribeth Smith & Associates, the National Anthem of Lay Ministry conference, and the Little Wish Foundation. Dr. Scott Dorsey of the American Choral Directors Association stated that Henry Leck created something for which there is no competition. Singers describe the Indianapolis Children’s Choir as “very talented,” say that “ICC grabbed mine” in reference to “grab the heart,” and one ICC singer states, “It is a place that I know I won’t be judged. That is what ICC means to me.”
