About

Indianapolis Children’s Choir Programs include choirs and music education programs such as the Music At Play early childhood program, the Foundations Choir, the Preparatory Choir program, the Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs, performing choirs, and regional affiliate choirs including the Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir (CICC) and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir (AACC). Singers take part in touring and concert season performances, including the Angels Sing holiday concert.

• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
• Schedule: Each week, the ICC holds 110 rehearsals and music classes.

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir was founded in 1986 by Henry Leck and is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. Its mission is: “The Indianapolis Children’s Choir transforms lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community.” The ICC serves more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years each year.

The Music At Play early childhood program offers children 18 months of age through kindergarten a beginning musical foundation. The Preparatory Choir program is a non-auditioned experience for singers in grades 1 through 3. The Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents. Six performing choirs rehearse at the ICC Performing Arts Center and include singers from grades 4 through 12 in choirs ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles.

Participants in Indianapolis Children’s Choir programs represent the diversity of central Indiana with children from nearly 20 counties, including all of the Indianapolis area suburbs and nearby rural communities. As part of its Community Outreach program, the ICC offers regional affiliate choirs in Boone County (Zionsville), at Butler University, Hamilton County (Carmel and Fishers), Hendricks County (Avon, Brownsburg, and Danville), and Johnson County (Greenwood). The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir (CICC) is a cooperative effort of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the ICC and serves Columbus and surrounding areas, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir (AACC) is a division of the ICC and serves Anderson and surrounding areas. ICC singers have sung for Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations and events including The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, and opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

The ICC has often performed by blind audition for national professional music associations including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, Organization of American Kodály Educators, and American Orff-Schulwerk Association. In 2013, the choir sang for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during his public address at Butler University. The choir performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, at the 2004 FINA World Swimming Championships with live national anthems for all gold medal award winners, and in additional live nationally televised performances including the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship Game, US Grand Prix/Formular One, the Solheim Cup International Tournament, and the Indy 500 Festival Parade. The ICC has produced 15 CDs, including those with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos, In Endless Song and Lives in Tune: The Legacy of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which commemorated major milestones. The ICC has performed on every continent except Antarctica and in 2003 presented Indianapolis’ first professional children’s opera, The Trio of Minuet, at Clowes Memorial Hall.

The Angels Sing holiday concert at the historic Second Presbyterian Church is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR, and the ICC Alumni Association hosts former singers each year during the Sunday afternoon performance of the holiday concerts. Testimonials from community partners and audience members describe the choir as organized and professional and note positive reactions from conference attendees and event organizers. An American Choral Directors Association representative stated, “Henry Leck has created something for which there is no competition,” and singers have shared that “ICC grabbed mine!” and “It is a place that I know I won’t be judged. That is what ICC means to me.”
