Indianapolis Children’s Choir Programs include Music At Play, an early childhood program for ages 3–5, and a Music At Play early childhood program that offers children 18 months of age through kindergarten a beginning musical foundation. The Foundations Choir is for kindergarten singers. The Preparatory Program and Preparatory Choir are non-auditioned and offered to singers in grades 1 through 3. Six performing choirs rehearse at the ICC Performing Arts Center and include singers from grades 4 through 12 in choirs ranging from intermediate to advanced treble and mixed ensembles. The program also includes a Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs that offers children not traditionally able to sing in a choral setting a unique opportunity to explore their musical talents. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir was founded in 1986 by Henry Leck and is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. Each year, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir serves more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years. The mission of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community.
The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort between the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 9 in Columbus and surrounding areas. The Anderson Area Children’s Choir is a division of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and offers musical experiences to students in preschool through grade 12 in Anderson and surrounding areas. Regional affiliate choirs are part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir Community Outreach program in multiple counties and locations. The CICC Music Camp has brought together kids from seven counties for 30 years.
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles of the highest caliber each year. The choir has often performed by blind audition for national professional music associations, including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has produced 15 CDs, including those with the Canadian Brass and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and two videos, “In Endless Song” and “Lives in Tune: The Legacy of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir,” which commemorated major milestones. The Angels Sing holiday concert at Second Presbyterian Church is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir has performed on every continent except Antarctica.
Testimonials describe the Indianapolis Children’s Choir as organized and professional at events, with comments from partners such as Eskenazi Health, Meribeth Smith & Associates, the Little Wish Foundation, and the National Anthem of Lay Ministry noting the choir’s performances at their events. An American Choral Directors Association representative stated that Henry Leck created something for which there is no competition. Singers have shared that the Indianapolis Children’s Choir “grabbed” their heart and that it is a place where they feel they will not be judged.
