About
Indianapolis Children’s Choir Programs & Camps focuses on singing and choral music through early childhood music classes, music education programs, and day-programs and camps for students. The program also offers live virtual rehearsals and a Music Education Summit for teachers and educators.
• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
Founded in 1986, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) includes programs such as the Music At Play early childhood program for children 18 months through kindergarten and a Foundations Choir for kindergartners as an introduction to formal choir instruction. The ICC offers a Preparatory Choir as a non-auditioned experience for grades 1–3, a Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs in grades 3–9 that is tuition-free, and a Master Chorale high school division for grades 10–12 that includes one major choral work per year with a professional orchestra. The organization also runs regional affiliate choirs in multiple Indiana counties and locations and offers ICC Connects, a virtual program that allows participation from anywhere in the world. The ICC presents the Angels Sing holiday concert at Second Presbyterian Church, which is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR, and has taken tours on every continent except Antarctica.
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir states that its mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. The leadership team includes Founder Henry Leck; Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde; Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir (CICC) Director Melissa Garcia; and CICC Administrator Deborah Eikenbary. The Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir is a cooperative effort between the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir is a division of the ICC.
The ICC regularly appears with orchestras, professional artists, and ensembles including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Brass, The Chieftains, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Carmel Symphony, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis Opera, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Judy Collins, Denyse Graves, Celine Dion, Sylvia McNair, Sandi Patty, Angela Brown, Marvin Hamlisch, and Barry Manilow. ICC singers have performed at Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations and events such as The Governor’s Arts Awards, the Indiana Living Legends Award Gala, the Indiana Leadership Summit, the Tenth Pan Am Games, President George W. Bush’s visit to Indiana, the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication, Project 9/11 Indianapolis Memorial Dedication Ceremony, the Indianapolis Prize Gala, and the opening and closing ceremonies of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. The choir has performed by blind audition for national professional music associations including five national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
Testimonials from partner organizations and audience members describe the ICC as organized and professional, and they note positive reactions from conference attendees and event organizers. An IYC singer states that “ICC grabbed mine,” referring to “grab the heart,” a phrase attributed to Henry Leck, and an ICC singer states that it is a place where they know they will not be judged.
