About

Indy PAL Girls Basketball is part of the Indy PAL program, which uses athletics and activities such as girls basketball, baseball, volleyball, boxing, football, cheer and dance, soccer, softball, camping, swimming, arts and crafts, and track and field events to engage youth. Indy PAL Girls Basketball takes place at the JTV Hill Center, where two new outdoor basketball courts were constructed as part of the program.

Indy PAL was established in 1940 after Indy Parks Director J.R. Townsend and Chief of Police Michael F. Morrissey visited Denver's Police Athletic League program and created the Indianapolis Police Athletic League. Indy PAL has been fostering positive relationships with youth and police for more than 80 years in Indianapolis and has served and mentored nearly 40,000 of Marion County’s under-appreciated youth population in its history. The mission of Indy PAL is to provide youth in Indianapolis with the opportunity to participate in athletics, mentoring, and educational and cultural activities that will reduce crime, provide vital life skills, increase self-esteem, and promote a positive relationship with police.

The program is led by the Indy Public Safety Foundation in partnership with IMPD's Community Engagement & Outreach Bureau, and it partners with Indy Parks and IMPD to operate out of the JTV Hill Center. Indy PAL remains a member chapter of the National Association of Police Athletic/Activities League (National PAL), collaborating with other chapters to share best practices and resources. The Indy Public Safety Foundation supports the safety and quality of life of everyone in Indianapolis, leads Gun Violence Reduction Strategy and Domestic Violence Champions in partnership with the Office of Public Health & Safety, works to decrease neighborhood conflict by growing the Indy Center for Conflict Resolution, and builds community trust and relations through Indy PAL and other programs. IPSF invested over $1 million in Indy PAL, including funding the hiring of the program's first Director in over 20 years and constructing two new outdoor basketball courts at the JTV Hill Center.

Indy PAL’s mentoring program focuses on middle and high school youth and is designed to encourage positive thinking, promote higher education, establish an appreciation for diversity, and reinforce good citizenship. Indy PAL connects youth with a network of caring adults, including coaches, mentors, and community members. Indy PAL is described as a vital program that ensures youth have equitable opportunities to reach their full potential, regardless of place, race, or identity, and it is designed to address significant challenges in the relationship between law enforcement and communities, particularly communities of color.
