About

Music At Play is an early childhood program that offers choral experiences, music education, and music classes that give children a beginning musical foundation. Children in Music At Play take part in rehearsals that connect to choral music performance as part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir programs.

• Ages: 18 months–5 years old
• Schedule: Each week, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir holds 110 rehearsals and music classes.

Music At Play is part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, which was founded in 1986 by Henry Leck and is under the leadership of Executive Artistic Director Joshua Pedde. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir’s mission is to transform lives through powerful choral experiences and music education, empowering young voices to grow, connect, and lead on stage and in the community. Each year, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir serves more than 2,500 young people between the ages of 18 months and 18 years, with participants coming from nearly 20 counties, more than 360 schools, and 56 school districts. The organization also includes the Jubilate Choir for singers with special needs, the Columbus Indiana Children’s Choir, and the Anderson Area Children’s Choir.

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir performs in various professional settings and has appeared at events such as Indiana gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, Super Bowl XLVI, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship Game, and the Indy 500 Festival Parade. The choir has performed on every continent except Antarctica and has been selected by blind audition to perform for national professional music associations including the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, Organization of American Kodály Educators, and American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Its Angels Sing holiday concert at Second Presbyterian Church is broadcast each year by 13 WTHR, and the choir performed the national anthem with Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson at Super Bowl XLVI.

Families and community partners have shared feedback about the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, including comments about powerful performances at events such as the Eskenazi Celebration event, the NALM Conference, and programs with organizations like Eskenazi Health and the Little Wish Foundation. Singers in the program have described the impact of founder Henry Leck and have said that ICC is a place where they do not feel judged.
