About
The SEED/STEM Summer Program gives high school students hands-on research experience through an immersive summer project. Students work alongside professional researchers and lab members, actively participating in research projects and contributing to cutting-edge projects in health, technology, and life sciences. By the end of the summer, students prepare a research poster to showcase their findings.
• Ages: 15–18 years old
• Schedule: Eight-week summer session, Monday through Friday, for approximately eight hours per day
• Price: Stipends up to $4,000 for eligible students based on financial need; goal in 2026 is to fund 26 stipends of $4,000 each
The SEED/STEM Summer Program is an eight-week program open to Indiana high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors and uses a competitive application process. Students are paired with leading research faculty who mentor them through their summer project. The program offers Indiana high school students a hands-on research experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The SEED/STEM Program is part of a longstanding initiative in collaboration with the American Chemical Society’s Project SEED, which was founded in 1968 to ensure that all students have access to research and educational opportunities. Student stipends are possible in part through generous donor support, and supporters can give financial gifts to the STEM Program fund. Financial eligibility for stipends is tied to family income not exceeding 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines based on family size, and students must provide documentation such as a 1040 tax form, proof of eligibility for Free and Reduced Lunch, SNAP, WIC, TRIO programs, or SAT/ACT fee waivers.
The program also offers mentor opportunities for professionals to strengthen the research pipeline, generate new interest in research topics, and give back. Individuals who are not mentors can host a workshop or share their career journey with students. The SEED/STEM Program lists Vanessa Santana as the SEED/STEM Program Coordinator.
