About

STEM Pre-K introduces children to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts through daily curriculum activities. Children use scientific tools such as microscopes, magnifying glasses, rulers, weights, and balances, and they interact with technology through an interactive smart board. Daily Carpet Time is used as Hypotheses Time, when children develop a hypothesis and then investigate it through hands-on experimentation, and they also record and describe changes in weather and seasons. Guest instructors and collaborators from Indiana University Indianapolis STEM departments and offices complement daily instruction, and staff document student growth through each STEM-related field.

• Ages: 4–5 years old
• Schedule: The Center is open Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 5:30 pm.

Trained teachers guide student-led, project-based investigations that introduce the scientific method to the learning process. The curriculum is built upon Indiana’s Early Learning Development Framework for physical, life, earth and space sciences, weather, and engineering processes, and includes art, reading, writing, and play time throughout the day. The STEM preschool experience is described as a setting in which children can wonder, solve, learn, and grow, and the program is described as allowing children to explore their world and providing foundations for continued intellectual and academic growth preparing them for future success. The broader Center for Young Children offers year-round daycare programs for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years and year-round programs for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, and states that its curriculum is designed to promote independence, self-esteem, confidence, and critical thinking skills, and that children learn best through play, hands-on activities, and interaction with their environment.

Since its founding in 1979, the Center’s stated mission has been to provide exceptional care and early childhood education to the IU Indianapolis and Indianapolis communities. It is licensed to accept CCDF and On-My-Way Pre-K program vouchers. The Center reports that it offers childcare and early childhood education for both the University and the broader Indianapolis communities.

Parent testimonials describe positive experiences with the teachers, programming, and classroom structure, including comments about children’s growth, transitions, and feeling that their children are where they belong.
