About
The Tutoring program offers 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring, with both online tutoring and in-person tutoring options. It also offers comprehensive evaluations to test for dyslexia, diagnostic, multisensory, and direct instruction in phonics using the Orton-Gillingham approach, and training for every level. The program includes a 5 week summer full day camp that provides 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring daily as part of Camp Delafield, along with small group reading and writing instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach during the school day in schools and a college prep evaluation for students age 16 and older.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Tutoring and related services are available Monday–Thursday 9am–5pm and Friday 9am–12:30pm; a 5 week summer full day camp option is also offered.
Testing in the Tutoring program is administered by a certified school psychologist, and testing includes both a one-hour parent consultation with a Dyslexia Institute of Indiana (Dii) dyslexia specialist and a 90-minute post-testing conference with the psychologist. Dii serves students, parents, adults, and educators who are impacted by dyslexia and other language learning difficulties through several primary programs using the Orton-Gillingham approach, and offers 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring for students ages 6 to adult. Over 5,000 students have been served over the past 36 years, and there are 82 staff members across all Indiana counties.
Believing that all people are entitled to fulfill their potential, the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana exists to serve children, adolescents and adults with specific learning disabilities. Dii has been helping children with dyslexia and other learning differences improve literacy skills since 1989, when Dii was incorporated, and Camp Delafield was first held in 1990. In 1995, Betty Wells donated money that allowed Dii to begin outreach tutoring through Wells Outreach Tutoring Services, which enabled Dii to provide services year round for the first time. In 2006, a major grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Trust enabled Dii to launch the ReadySetREAD program in schools, which uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and writing in small groups during the school day. By 2014, Camp Delafield had served over 1,000 students, Wells Outreach Tutoring Services had impacted 2,474 people, educator training had reached nearly 2,500 individuals, and ReadySetREAD had reached nearly 1,290 students, and in 2025 Dii is 36 years strong.
The leadership team includes Deniese Hofmeister (CEO); Calvin Chambers (Chair/Treasurer); Crystal Givens (Vice Chair, Treasurer & Secretary); Charisse Alexander (Board member); Cathy Buyarski (Board member); Allie Green (Board member); Dr. Linden Hill (Board member); Jenny Hughes (Board member); Nancy Janneck (Board member); and Ethan Pratt (Board member). ReadySetREAD is an initiative focused on creating literacy using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and writing in small groups during the school day in schools, and the Nina Mason Pulliam Trust gave Dii a major grant that enabled the launch of this program. Millions have been raised for Dii programs through donations, and the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana is thankful for members of the community that serve on its board.
