About

The Summer Nature Program takes place in a setting that offers fishing, hiking, non-motor boating, picnicking, scout camping, and horseback riding for those who bring their own horse. Participants also have access to a two-mile paved bike path where biking, jogging, and walking are popular. In the winter season, available activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, and ice fishing.

The mission of the Summer Nature Program is aligned with the statement that in this densely populated area, the park provides a place for people of all ages to enjoy and appreciate nature’s beauty. The program is part of a broader conservation-focused transformation guided by a detailed Forestry Management Plan. This plan was developed by licensed Forester Joseph Kowalski and is supported by State funding and the Massachusetts Forest Stewardship Program. The plan focuses on tackling invasive species and creating pollinator and meadow habitats, including a four-acre large meadow that has been revitalized and seeded with native wildflower seeds to create a pollinator haven. Invasive species such as Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), Multiflora Rose (Rosa Polyantha), and Bittersweet (Celastrus Orbiculatus) have been ground down and mulched in certain areas, and some trees severely damaged or killed by invasive vines were carefully removed. Future plans include introducing native, pollinator-friendly bushes and trees to the meadows and their borders as grant monies become available.
