Nantucket Island Surf School offers surfing lessons that include private surf lessons and group surf lessons. The program also provides surfboard rentals, boogie board rentals, and wetsuit rentals, and all equipment for lessons is provided, including surfboards and wetsuits. Participants are asked to arrive in a bathing suit with sunscreen.

Owner and founder Gary “Kona” Kohner started Nantucket Island Surf School in the summer of 1999 to share his love of surfing and the ocean with others. The program has been teaching surfing to students of all ages and abilities since 1999 and is celebrating 26 years of teaching students to surf. Gary “Kona” Kohner is certified in lifesaving and CPR, and he grew up on Nantucket and started surfing in 1984. He has surfed in Morrocco, Brazil, California, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Hawaii, Panama, Ireland, Spain, Madeira Island, Peru, Samoa, and South Africa. Nantucket Island Surf School is described as Nantucket’s premiere surf school, offers private and group lessons with advanced reservations required, and can be booked by calling 508.560.1020.
One parent, Alexandra Leighton, reports that her son began private lessons at 6 years of age and looks forward to lessons with Gary and his instructors whenever they are on island. Another parent, Peter D., describes Nantucket Island Surf School as the best surf school on the island for any ability level or age and notes that they have rental surfboards and wetsuits. Joe Thomas shares that he and four friends took an intro surfing lesson and that the instructors got all of them up surfing in the first hour.
